Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Hey! Sorry I forgot to post until now...

In class we finished up the PowerPoint on the causes of the Great Depression. You can find a link to it on yesterday's post.

You got a reading packet for homework. No questions this time. Phew! Sorry, it's not in a readily upload-able mode. If you need a copy, it's in the Extra Hand-Outs bin.

Also, a short piece of news:
JOHN MACLELLAN BROKE MY PENCIL SHARPENER TODAY. FOR SHAME.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Tues., Jan 26

Homework:
Do some research-

What were/are the causes of our current (2008-present) economic downturn?

  • Are there any causes in common with the Great Depression? Are we in/headed into another Great Depression?
  • Many, many experts are still trying to figure out the answers to these question, so don't feel as if you need to find definitive answers. These are relevant questions in understanding our current situation, as well as more effectively evaluating the lessons of the past...

15 Points Possible:
10 Points for describing the source, and providing an answer to the key questions above.
A solid paragraph is adequate, but more is always welcome :)
5 Points for bringing in the source (printing out the article).

DUE NEXT CLASS.

Mon., Jan. 25

Get ready, because things are about to get really depressing...

New Unit= THE GREAT DEPRESSION!! Woooooooot

Today we started asking ourselves, "What went wrong?" It's a question I ask a lot.

More specifically, we approached the question:
"What were the causes of the Stock Market Crash of 1929?"

Good luck studying for mid-terms. Below you will find a link to the review sheet!

Reminders:

Your mid-term will be a Paper 1 on the Imperialism Era and a 45 minute Paper 2 style essay.
You will have five different essay questions to choose from.

To do well on this essay you will need to bring in SPECIFIC AND DETAILED historical knowledge. On the review sheet, I've given you a list of identifications from each chapter, which indicate that these people/events/ideas should be brought in as evidence when writing an essay that falls under that topic.

Please e-mail me with any questions!

Homework:

Answer these questions on the Sacco and Vanzetti reading:

USE EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWERS

1. What underlying causes of "prejudice against foreigners and anarchists" does Bortman discuss in the opening paragraphs of his viewpoint paper?

2. How did the "three themes of public opinion and official concern" discussed by Bortman converge on Sacco and Vanzetti?

3. What evidence does Bortman present that Sacco and Vanzetti were denied a chance at justice?

If you need the reading, please see yesterday's post for the link.

Monday, January 11, 2010

Mon., Jan. 11

In Class:

We discussed the issues I'd asked you to address in your writing response which was homework over the weekend, and began watching PBS Nova's presentation (hint, hint, it's a link if you wanna watch the whole darn thing):

Judgement Day: Intelligent Design on Trial

Homework:

Reading, (hint, hint, this is a link too)
"Were Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti treated fairly by the American justice system?"
You only need to read the first Viewpoint: Sacco and Vanzetti were denied a fair trial and were executed because of prejudice against foreigners and anarchists.

Be prepared for a short quiz next class.

Homework:

Read, Viewpoint Essay: "The power and the purposes of the fundamentalist movement have been misrepresented and oversimplified by historians," by Thomas E. Woods Jr.

Here's the link to the Thomson-Gale article. This article has two different complete viewpoint essays included. You DO NOT have to read them all. Just the first.

*Reminder, the password is hyan_log for Thomson-Gale if you need it.

Complete a Writing Response, Due Monday
Compare and Contrast the article you read last class with this viewpoint essay:
  • What new information did you take away from this viewpoint essay?
  • Did it succeed in changing your own viewpoint on the Scopes trial?
  • Do you thik the societal divide revealed by the Scopes trial still exists today? Defend your answer.

Shoot for approximately a page of writing. It does not need to be formal.

Because you all want to listen to it again, here's a link to "You Won't Make a Monkey Out of Me," plus lots of other info on the Scopes, "Monkey Trial"...
